The Phantom Speaks (1. Overview. Harvey Bogardus lures Frankie Teel, whom he suspects of having an affair with his wife, Betty Hanzel, to a park, then kills him. Upon leaving, Bogardus runs into Louis Fabian and his little daughter Mary and uses them as cover to flee the park. Shortly thereafter, Bogardus is arrested, tried, found guilty and sentenced to be executed. Paul Renwick is meeting Bogardus one hour before his death. Matt is dating Renwick's daughter Joan, and the editor believes Matt can get an inside story.
The Phantom of the Opera is there - inside my mind. For now I find the Phantom of the Opera is there - inside my. Reluctantly, Matt meets with Renwick, who explains his work in psychic science, the main theory of which is a belief that there is an immortal human energy or force that survives beyond death. Although Renwick's work is ridiculed, he tells Matt that he is near finding proof, yet is evasive about whether Bogardus is connected to his search. At their meeting just before the execution, Renwick asks the killer if he has read his book. Bogardus admits he has, but scoffs at Renwick's theory. Renwick tells him the soul has to have the will to continue after the body dies and that he believes that in Bogardus he has found the strongest will he has ever known. He is certain that Bogardus can prove his theory and return from the dead. Bogardus dismisses the doctor and goes to his death, declaring he was justified in committing murder and that he is not through yet. Following the execution, Renwick is consummed with thoughts of Bogardus and shuts himself in his office, where he tries summoning Bogardus. The spirit of the dead killer appears, but to Renwick's horror, Bogardus is uninterested in proving any of the doctor's theories and instead overpowers and takes mental possession of him. Unable to resist Bogardus' strong will, Renwick takes a gun and goes to attorney James J. Speaking in Bogardus's voice, Renwick accuses Kennerley of failing him at the trial and shoots him. When the police and Matt arrive to investigate, they discover the killing has been recorded by Kennerley's dictaphone and are puzzled by the strange voice and the fact that Kennerley called out Bogardus' name. Matt also finds a partially smoked cigarette that has been crumpled in half, a distinctive habit attributed to Bogardus. Back at the Renwick home, the doctor's assistant, Cornelia Willmont, is concerned over Renwick's strange behavior and inability to recall his recent activities. A little later, Renwick is again possessed by Bogardus and forced to find Betty and murder her. Matt is called to the crime scene and upon discovering another tell- tale cigarette, begins wondering about the doctor's increasingly odd behavior. He returns to the Renwicks and questions the doctor, but Cornelia covers Renwick's confusion by supplying him with an alibi. Renwick departs in a cab, intending to turn himself in to the police, but Bogardus again takes control of him. Still concerned about Renwick, Cornelia listens on the extension as Matt has the cab traced to the park and both she and Matt follow separately. Louis and Mary are at the park, but by the time Matt arrives, Louis is already dead, another victim of Bogardus' rage. Renwick stalks Mary, but is frightened away by Matt's approach, and as he comes to himself again, Cornelia finds him and takes him home. Bogardus tells Renwick he must murder Matt as he is getting too close to discovering the truth and then kill District Attorney Owen Mc. Allister for pursuing Bogardus' case. In desperation, Renwick tries to commit suicide, but Bogardus' powerful will stops him. Cornelia realizes Renwick's dilemma and he makes her promise to tell Mc. Allister listen in horror. The Canterbury Phantom Speaks. Frances Genter's Smile - - Who prepped for his Breeders' Cup Sprint win in 1. Canterbury Cup Handicap. Smile's daughter I'll Get Along was the dam of 2. Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones. It doesn't seem that long ago when the light blue colors and yellow hoops that adorned the runners from the Frances A. Genter Stable were seen regularly on sunny afternoons in Shakopee. Genter, a native of Minnesota, maintained stable divisions that raced in Florida and Chicago, and for a time her very best runners raced in the best company to be found on the New York circuit. Mrs. Genter's Smile was just one of a bevy of her fleet runners that were campaigned in the early days of Canterbury Downs, which had a surface that required 4. Mrs. Genter's daughter Frances Williams has maintained the family tradition of keeping a runner at Canterbury and she was rewarded with a Canterbury Horse of the Year trophy following the successful sophomore campaign of her homebred Run With Joy, who dominated the ranks of Minnesota- bred 3- year old fillies with her sparkling performances in 2. Minnesota Oaks and the Frances Genter Stakes, a race on the turf which is named for Ms. Williams' late mother. Now, anyone in the business who saw Run With Joy compete could tell you that this filly could have run just about anywhere. From a financial standpoint, Run With Joy would have made more money being campaigned in Kentucky or in Chicago. But this gorgeous daughter of Ghazi (a Grade I- winning stallion who stands at stud over at Eugene Boehlke's farm in Waverly) who was produced from the Unbridled daughter Unbridled Joy (Unbridled was Mrs. Genter's homebred winner of the Kentucky Derby in 1. The. Phantom can tell, strictly so that she could race back home in Minnesota. The point to breeding a nice filly like Run With Joy and watching her run in front of the home folks is not about making money. It's about appreciation for a thing of beauty and sharing it with others. Ask anyone who has spent time watching a filly like this one over the paddock fence in Shakopee. Until you have been in the presence of a creature as beautiful as this one, you have no idea what this game is really about. There are a lot of ugly things being said about horse racing these days and The Phantom has even heard the word . Nothing could be further from the truth. Fact is, the winningest racehorse in the entire country raced at Canterbury Park in 2. He goes by the name of Chickster and he won 1. Shakopee. In the weeks and months (and, hopefully) years ahead, The Phantom is going to be spreading a little of his Canterbury gospel in this space. I can assure you I do not work for the folks that own the track, nor am I necessarily in agreement with every decision made on its behalf, either by track management, the Minnesota Racing Commission or the state legislature. But I can tell you that Minnesota's racetrack has made an impact on a national scale and Canterbury's alumni are spread far and wide throughout the Thoroughbred racing industry. Preserving the history of this great racetrack and showing the readers why Canterbury is so great is the sole mission of the Canterbury Phantom. And I can also tell you that with the support of my fellow Minnesotans, Canterbury's best is yet to come. Hoping to see you trackside when the snow thaws.. The Canterbury Phantom.
